Excellent article outlining why it's important to work on building up core muscle strength.
The main muscles in the human torso comprise the "core," and they are more important to us than their relative neglect would suggest. Toned core muscles might not be as showy as hefty biceps, but core fitness is absolutely essential to physical health.
"The core is what keeps us upright and in proper body alignment," says Craig Sagert, certified personal trainer and Workout Centre Supervisor at the Jamie Platz YMCA in Edmonton.
"Without a strong core, the rest of the body isn't able to function properly. As well, weak core muscles means extra stress is put onto the spine. It's as if the core is a car's shock absorbers and the spine is the suspension.
When the shocks don't work, all the impact goes into the suspension -and it breaks."
